My son is getting to the age when I suspect he his beginning to lie, or at the very least use unsubtle trickery to get away with something. So I find it quite timely that I found a New York Magazine article on why and how often children lie. The article looks at lying as a developmental trait, even going so far as to argue that lying early is a sign of intelligence:

I am a father of a son. Is that different from being the father of girl? Conn Iggulden, author of the The Dangerous Book for Boys, thinks it is. I read an article by him this past summer where he argued that boys are inherent risk-takers who crave a little danger and excitement as they engage the world physically and mentally, and as a father, you have responsibility to foster an environment that tolerates a little danger and excitement. I have been rightly criticized by my wife for sometimes letting a little excitement become a little too much, but between the two of us an atmosphere of tolerable risk is, I hope, achieved. A good thing too, because Iggulden thinks a boy who is not exposed to a little danger will seek out far worse on his own. I hope to read the book soon (GVPL has the book).

I am hoping to be more current as time goes on, but would like to start this blog by touching on a few items related to fatherhood. And I am going to start with one of the first books recommended to me when I announced my impending fatherhood, The Evolution of Fatherhood by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson.
