Librarian Dad (BA, MLIS,) reads a lot of current events, opinion and book reviews on a daily basis. He is a typical Dad who sometimes yells, but also hugs, plays, takes his kid swimming, cooks everyone breakfast, gives mum plenty of breaks, and loves to read books with his kid.

Carly Sutherland knew everything about parenting before she actually had kids. Now she spends a lot of time trying to figure out what exactly she's doing, but she does get a lot of sloppy kisses along the way. She blogs about the learning curve of parenthood at http://topfiveparenting.wordpress.com.

Gaileen Flaman is one busy mama. Okay, "busy" is the definition of "mama", but Gaileen currently wears four hats. She works at Saanich Parks and Recreation in the afternoons and evenings, teaches Music Together two mornings a week, is a birth doula working towards certification, and resides with her partner Tim and their 18-month-old daughter, Sunny. She has also gone through Hypnobirthing training and is currently enrolled in a Breastfeeding Counselling for Health Care Professionals course through Douglas College. I feel like a lightweight after reading that list!

We are 3 weeks (or is it 4? I've lost count from lack of sleep) into a new phase in our almost-2-year-old's life.  What started as teeth (her bottom molars have come in but we have not seen the top ones) then grew to include sudden separation anxiety that was not there the week before, crescendoed with a rash that woke us all up many times a night, and finally concluded with a mystery fatigue that gave our little ball of energy a ghostly pallor and another wave of crankiness has been persisting for weeks, leaving us all strained and exhausted.

Parent Profile: Jan Picard explains the three trimesters of parenting PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Jan Picard has a theory. She sees three trimesters in parenting, just as we have three trimesters of pregnancy. Her credentials and research for this theory? She has raised three children (now between the ages of 28 and 18) and taught 16-18 year olds for the last 16 years. She points out that the books and theories on infant and child development follow an interesting time line: when we look at how a newborn changes, we start with weeks, then move to months, then as they become toddlers, it becomes half- and full-year changes and finally yearly changes. Jan's observations are that the final time frames are 6 year increments. She has seen three stages and uses terminology that equates the parenting and nurturing of a child with the growing of an in-utero baby: birth to age to age 6, 6 to 12, and finally 12 to 18.

Being a writer and copyeditor, I'm prone to nitpicking when it comes to the written word. It's not just in my job description, it is my job description. I'm usually pretty relaxed when it comes to spoken language, as we don't have time to edit ourselves when we speak.  (There is, though, a list of expressions that drive me nuts. I have always hated being told to "Have a good one" and to have "no worries" after I thank someone, and short forms of any word make me cringe. I don't even eat "veggies;" they are "vegetables" to me. Yep, I'm a bit sensitive to language.)
