Community Forum with Childminding (Victoria) PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Thursday, 25 March 2010
For everyone who has ever skipped out on a community meeting because they didn't know what to do with the kids, here is your chance.  This one should be of interest to anyone who lives, works or plays in Victoria.

As part of the public consultation for the update of Victoria's Official Community Plan, there will be a big Community Forum this coming weekend at Crystal Gardens. Friday evening (March 26th) will feature mocktail hour followed by a lively panel discussion, and Saturday(27TH) will have rotating presentations on a range of community issues.  The Official Community Plan will shape what Victoria looks like over the next 20-years, and this is a fun, engaging way to talk about where you want our community to go.

The best part?  Drop the kids off at the free child-minding service while you take in the presentations, discussions and some adult conversation!  When you miss the kids again, stop by the child & youth planning station for some fun, interactive activities*.  And don't forget to eat the FREE local food ("10 Mile Soup", anyone?), music, Friday night mocktails...   More details are below.

* Child-minding: Fri. & Sat.; Planning station: Sat. only

Join us for a Community Forum — Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at Crystal Garden

Help shape the Victoria that you want at an interactive public forum that will inform Victoria’s new Official Community Plan (OCP).

This Friday and Saturday stop by the Crystal Garden and learn how you can get involved and share your ideas and solutions for what our city will look like 30 years from now.

Friday, March 26

4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. — Drop by after work and check out displays and information related to the Official Community Plan. Chat with city staff and find out more about how you can participate over the coming months. Enjoy live music by the Gord Clements Quartet. Refreshments will be provided.

5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. — Join sustainability expert Mark Holland and Victoria panelists Adrien Sala, Cara Segger, Daniela Cubelic, and Franc D’Ambrosio for an interactive and dynamic discussion on the challenges and opportunities we face over the next 30 years.

Keynote speaker Mark Holland is one of BC’s leading sustainability planners and thinkers. In 2009, Mark was appointed to the City of Vancouver’s Greenest City Action Team alongside such leaders as Dr. David Suzuki and former BC Premier Mike Harcourt. A LEED™-accredited planner, Mark’s past work includes serving as the project coordinator for the Southeast False Creek development project, site of the 2010 Olympic Village and a leading model of sustainability in North America.

Saturday, March 27

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. - Saturday’s format is drop-in with presentations and discussions running hourly throughout the day. Stop by and learn about issues that are critical to your community and find out how you can engage with your neighbours and friends to turn ideas into action. Learn about the results from our recent Citizens’ Survey and participate in Community Circle training.

Interactive 45 minute discussions on the following topics will run every hour throughout the day from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.:

  • Sustainable Heritage
  • The Climate Change and Energy Challenge
  • What Does Your City Look Like in 30 Years?
  • Local Food Systems
  • Victoria’s Urban Design
  • Trends and Prospects for the Local Economy
  • Housing in Victoria

Learn about other projects influencing Victoria including:

  • Regional Growth Strategy (CRD)
  • Downtown Core Area Plan (City of Victoria)
  • Rapid Transit Project (BC Transit)

Community Circle Training

Training will run every hour, on the hour from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Learn about Circles and how to host one in your community. Community Circles are citizen-led discussions on key topics the OCP should address. This is your opportunity to share your ideas and solutions for issues facing Victoria.

Children and Youth

Free childcare is available for children 2 years and up. Fun activities for youth will also be provided.

Local food and refreshments will be available. This event is free. Registration is not required.

What is an ‘Official Community Plan’?

An "OCP" is a key policy that sets direction for a city’s growth, urban form, transportation, housing, services and infrastructure while considering regional context, local economy, community health, cultural vitality and diversity, the natural environment, and climate change. Other city policies follow and support the OCP.

The City’s OCP was last updated in 1995 and will be revised over the next 12 months to improve performance on a new set of social, economic, and environmental goals.

Please let your friends and neighbours know that their input is needed, and help create the city you want in 2040. Feel free to circulate and post in membership newsletters or list serves.

Some community centres and programs are on hiatus during Spring Break (March 8-22,) so please call ahead of programs listed in the Playtime Calendar to avoid disappointment.  (I can't remove individual occurrences of repeating events manually from the Calendar.)

I have been notified that Burnside Gorge Community Association centre is closed March 15-18.   One of their wonderful programs, Mother Goose, is on hiatus but accepting names for the April 19th set.
