Youth from across the Juan de Fuca region will be exhibiting art work about the environment they live in at the Dogwood Initiative’s "This is My Home" children’s art show. The Show will feature 40 paintings and drawings from the Port Renfrew, Saseenos, and Sooke Elementary Schools. After the opening reception pieces will be displayed at cafes and restaurants in Sooke for one month.

This project is part of the Dogwood Initiative’s "Vancouver Island Is Not For Sale" campaign to prevent urban sprawl from spreading across the Capital Regional District. To date it has mobilized thousands of people to protect farm land on the Saanich Peninsula and Forests in the Juan de Fuca region from being bulldozed for development projects. For more information about the campaign visit http://dogwoodinitiative.org/campaigns/not-for-sale. Visit the event page www.dogwoodinitiative.org/events for further event updates.

Saturday, May 15th, 1:00 to 3:00 PM

A workshop presented by Ms. Leanna Madill, Graduate student, UVIc dept of Curriculum and Instruction
Why do girls typically sit still in class? Why do boys typically take up so much attention in class? We will talk about how boys and girls are socialized, and how that potentially hard wires their brains to learn in particular ways. This presentation will include an examination of the stereotypes embedded in the literature, media, and everyday language we used to transact in the world, and which work to limit the behavior, values and beliefs, likes and dislikes, and general ways of being for boys and girls. We will also address what we can do as parents or educators to disrupt and accommodate these patterns of learning.
-CHILDCARE will be available on site but you must preregister (limited space)!

All events are free but please contact us to register.
